NACEA's Entrepreneur SeriesVC, Business Plan Workshop and Presentation
NACEA (North-America Chinese Entrepreneur Association) is pleased to announce the next in our Entrepreneur Series: Business Plan Presentation & Pitching, a public event to be held On October 24th 2009, at New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT, Newark , NJ ). The contest is a joint effort with NJIT incubator and our long-time supporters SAPA (Sino-American Pharmaceutical Association), NJCCPS (New Jersey Chinese Computer Professional Society), NJentrepreneur.com, and NJIT Chinese Student & Scholars Society.
Got an idea, want to hear professional VC, Angel Investor's options, and guidance? Here is your chance, Don't Miss It!
With Venture Capitalist and Angel Investors sitting in the panel to critique your project and business plan, this will be a great opportunity to present your project to your potential investors, and have them seriously take a look at your projects. It will also be an excellent learning experience to get to know how the angel investors' and VC's judge projects.
Only a very limited number of applicants will be selected to present their projects (5 minutes each), so if you are interested in presenting, please submit your business plan summary ASAP to hu_tony@yahoo.com.

- Professionals who wish to start their own business or have great ideas that he/she thinks will be a success.

Joe Chin
Joe is a career Internet entrepreneur and has successfully founded numerous companies over the past 15 years. Currently, Joe is the Founder and CEO of SourcePad, a virtual outsourcing company. Prior to SourcePad, Joe was the founding CEO of the largest ad network for ecommerce sites and product manufacturers, Guidester (now Searchandise Commerce). Formerly, Joe was the Managing Director of REOL, Internet Analyst at Laidlaw, founder/President of Diadem (a multi-player game company), and founder/principal of JEV (an import/export company). Prior to becoming an entrepreneur, Joe was an engineer, designing multi-million dollar satellites at Hughes Aircaft. Joe earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Columbia University and a Masters of Science from the University of California Berkeley.
Joe is a frequent speaker and has been quoted in numerous publications, including BusinessWeek, Fortune, Crain's, Advertising Age and Inc. Magazine. Over the course of his career, Joe has raised over $20 million in financing from both angels and VC's.
Panelist Bio:
John Ason, Angel Investor
John Ason has been an angel investor for over 13 years specializing in early stage pre-revenue companies. He has made over thirty eclectic investments in the areas of e-commerce, technology, advertising and entertainment. John was at AT&T Bell Labs for over 25 years, first involved in software and technology development, then in marketing and business management of large telecommunications projects overseas. He is a graduate of the Illinois Institute of Technology. He is a guest lecturer at the Rothman Institute of Entrepreneurial Studies at Fairleigh Dickinson and at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. John's hobbies include traveling, golf, GO (oriental game) and mentoring companies.

For about half if his investments, John has been the lead angel devoting a significant amount of his time to mentoring the companies. A typical company consists of one or two people in a garage or kitchen with minimal or no revenues. Average investment from the angel network for the first round is $275K. Any low capital industry with high growth potential qualifies with the exception of medical and biotech. As a starting point, John will accept only one page executive level summaries via email (ason@comcast.net).
Benjamin Sun, Angel Investor
Benjamin Sun is an internet entrepreneur and angel investor. Mr. Sun's first venture was Community Connect Inc. where he served as President & CEO for 12 years. Mr. Sun co-founded Community Connect Inc. in 1996 and grew the company to be a leading online publisher targeting various niche markets. According to comScore, Community Connect's sites - AsianAvenue.com, BlackPlanet.com, MiGente.com (pronounced mee-hen-tay), FaithBase.com and GLEE.com collectively generated over 500 million page views each month. This made Community Connect not only the leader in reaching Asian Americans, African Americans, Latinos, Christians and the LGBT community but also positioned their network of sites as one of the Top 50 highest trafficked sites on the Internet based on page views. Mr. Sun started Community Connect in his Manhattan based apartment with a small team of friends and a business plan. He was responsible for growing the company by raising over $20 million from notable investors including Comcast and Sandler Capital and using those resources to build powerful new media brands. In April 2008, Community Connect Inc. was acquired by Radio One, Inc. the fifth largest radio company in the U.S.
Prior to helping launch Community Connect, Mr. Sun worked in Merrill Lynch's Technology Investment Banking Group where he was involved in numerous corporate finance and merger and acquisition transactions in the technology industry. He executed over $500 million in equity financing transactions for Internet, enterprise software, and wire and cable industry companies.
Mr. Sun has been profiled by Crain's New York Business as one of the top under-40 executives to watch. Mr. Sun holds a BA degree in Economics from the University of Michigan.
Wayne Tamarelli, Angel Investor
Wayne Tamarelli is one of the top angel investor in the New Jersey area. Wayne's primary business activity is as a value-added angel investor in early stage technology businesses in the greater New Jersey and San Francisco Bay areas, making both active and passive investments. He serves on a number of boards of directors and advisory boards. In 1983 he purchased Dock Resins Corporation in a leveraged buyout and successfully grew its revenues and profits as Chairman, CEO and sole owner. In 1997 he sold the company at a substantial profit and remained CEO until 2000. He was with Engelhard Corporation from 1970 to 1983 as Senior Vice President where he managed $billion+ groups of worldwide businesses and also had senior management responsibility for corporate strategic planning and corporate R&D. He was an R&D manager at Exxon from 1966 to 1970. Earlier Dr. Tamarelli served as a captain in the U.S. Army and an engineering professor at Carnegie-Mellon University. He has BS, MS, and PhD degrees in engineering from Carnegie-Mellon University and an MBA in marketing and international business from New York University.

Matt Bieber Venture Capitalist (Originate Ventures)
Matt Bieber joined Originate Ventures May 2007 as a Senior Associate. He is the initial contact for Business Plan submissions; directs the investment due diligence; conducts the financial modeling; and oversees the intern program. Prior to joining Originate, Matt was with Bear Stearns in the Financial Analytics and Structured Transactions group (F.A.S.T.). Matt was also an investment banking analyst with Fairmount Partners, a regional investment banking boutique. He has been a member of Barclays Capital in the distressed debt group, an overseas research analyst for Deloitte & Touche based in Prague and an intern for Senator Arlen Specter's office in addition to a volunteer for former Senator Rick Santorum's campaign.
Matt is an entrepreneur through and through. He founded an online entertainment company focused on massive online role-playing games, which he rolled into IGE.com where he became a premier account vendor. Matt is the Treasurer of the Lehigh Valley Network of Young Professionals and has been a judge for Wharton's VCIC competition. Matt is a graduate of Lehigh University with a BS in Business with a concentration in Financial Mathematics.
Sean Cao, Venture Capitalist (New Leaf Venture Partners)
Sean was most recently an Associate at New Leaf Venture Partners before leaving to join one of New Leaf's operating company. His experience with the operating company will bring some inside view of how VC manage their invested project. Prior to joining New Leaf, Sean spent seven years in the pharmaceutical and biotech industry, first at sanofi-aventis and then at Johnson & Johnson. Sean earned a Ph.D. in Cell and Molecular Biology from the University of Virginia, and an M.B.A. degree with honor from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.
Michelle Lam, Venture Capitalist (Bain Capital)
Michelle is a Principal to Bain Capital Ventures, which she joined in 2006. Prior to joining Bain Capital, Michelle worked with Parthenon Capital, LLC, specializing in business services, telecommunications and technology. Previously, Michelle worked with Corporate Strategy at Microsoft Corporation and the Boston Consulting Group. She began her career in Audit and Business Advisory Services at PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP.
Ms. Lam received her BA and Masters of Accountancy, with Distinction, from the University of Waterloo, Canada.
