Biographies of Speakers/Panelists
Upendra Chivukula is the first Asian-Indian American elected to the New Jersey General Assembly and the fourth Indian- American in the US to be elected to state office. He is currently serving his fifth term in the Assembly, representing the 17th district, which encompasses Highland Park, New Brunswick, North Brunswick, Piscataway, Milltown, and Franklin Township. Upendra is the Chair of the Telecommunications & Utilities Committee and a member of the Appropriations Committee in the Assembly. He is a member of the Science and Technology Commission for the State of New Jersey, the Asian American Study Foundation and recently became a member of the Intergovernmental Relations Commission. He has served on the International Education Taskforce, World Languages Instruction Committee and the Board of State Canvassers. Upendra co-founded the NJ Legislative Science & Technology Caucus, as well as the World Languages & International Studies Caucus in the Legislature. Governor Florio of New Jersey appointed him to be a Public Member of the New Jersey State Board of Social Work Examiners. He served on the board of the New Jersey State Cross-Acceptance Committee from 1994 to 1997. Assemblyman Chivukula is on National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL) Executive Committee. He was past Chair of the NCSL Communications, Technology and Interstate Commerce Committee. He also served on the Energy & Electric Utilities Committee, as well as the Task Force on Homeland Security for the NCSL. Assemblyman Chivukula has served on the New Jersey delegation to the Democratic National Convention in 1996, 2000, 2004 and in 2008. Upendra was an Elector for the Electoral College in 2004. He
is a Leadership New Jersey Fellow (1998), Flemming Institute Fellow
(2003), and the Past President of Franklin Township Lions Club and
Zone 2 Chairman in District 16-D. He is a National Committee Member
of the Association of Indians in America, Past Secretary of NJ
Chapter of Indian American Forum for Political Education and Past
President of Asian American Political Coalition. He graduated from
the Senior Managers in State and Local Government program at the John
F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University and is a
graduate, University of Virginia, Emerging Leaders Program
Upendra
has a B.E.E. from Guindy’s Engineering College, India and
Masters in Electrical Engineering from City College of the City
University of New York. He is a consultant for WTC, Inc and has
drawn extensive technical and business experience working at AT&T
Bell Laboratories.
Upendra
has been married for over 30 years to his wife Dayci and has two
children, Suraj and Damianty.
Assistant District Director, Lender Relations Division/Capital Access, Small Business Administration, Newark, NJ As the Senior Credit Officer of the Small Business Administration’s New Jersey District Office, Mr. Boone is responsible for the delivery of the entire Agency’s Loan Programs throughout New Jersey. Mr. Boone is in charge of increasing SBA loans volume in New Jersey to the small business community by the enrollment of “new” SBA Lenders, which included Federal Credit Unions and Community Banks, as well as Saving Institutions. Mr. Boone was appointed Chief of Finance for SBA New Jersey District Office in October, 1994 and became Assistant District Director, in charge of all Agency Credit and Lending issues for the New Jersey SBA office in 1996. Out of 69 SBA offices nationwide, the New Jersey District Office is now always ranked as one of the Agency’s top District, regarding SBA approved loans, nationwide, sometimes as high as # 2 nationwide. Mr. Boone attended Union
College, as well as Bloomfield College, where he made the Dean's
List, majoring in Business
Administration & Accounting. He was a Vice-President of Commercial Lending
at First National
State Bank (now
Wachovia Bank/Well Fargo) for 10+ years. Mr. Boone was a Marine,
S/Sgt and is a Viet-Nam Veteran. Hence, as an ex-banker &
veteran, he understands small businesses needs for financial
assistance.
Senior Venture Officer, Clean Technology, NJ Economic Development Authority (EDA) The EDA is a state financing and development agency that works to
strengthen New Jersey’s economy by retaining and growing
businesses through financial assistance, by renewing communities, and
by promoting the State’s strategic advantages to attract
domestic and international businesses. Paula focuses on working with
investors and early stage clean technology companies under the Edison
Innovation Fund, an integrated set of resources that support
financing initiatives throughout all stages of development and
commercialization, and delivering a suite of clean energy solutions
to this community. She previously worked in middle market corporate
finance at Chase and corporate and investment banking at HSBC where
she managed a global portfolio of over 100 public sector clients. She
is a member of several clean energy advisory review boards at the
EDA. She also serves on the Fairleigh Dickinson University
Sustainable Business Incubator Advisory Council and several boards of
professional accounting and finance organizations. Paula received her
BA degree in Economics from Northwestern University, her MBA in
Finance from NYU and is a Certified Management Accountant.
Associate Vice President, Technology Development, NJIT Judith A. Sheft is the Associate Vice President Technology Development at the New Jersey Institute of Technology. She is responsible for managing the university’s Office of Technology Development and creates programs and policies focusing on patent creation, intellectual property valuation, strategic use and protection of IP assets. She is also involved with economic development in the Newark Innovation Zone having responsibilities for management of the university’s high technology business accelerator/incubator, the Enterprise Development Center, and the Defense technical Procurement Center. She is the strategy lead for entrepreneurial initiatives on the North Jersey WIRED grant. Since 2007 she has been a member of the NJ – Israel Commission. Prior to joining NJIT, she had been a founding member of Licenz Group, an IP consulting firm that focuses on assisting companies to maximize the value of their IP portfolio. Before that she had worked as the Intellectual Property and Compliance Vice President for Agere Systems, the semiconductor subsidiary of Lucent Technologies. In that capacity she had profit and loss responsibility for Agere’s patent and technology licensing business. She was involved in the allocation of intellectual property assets during the AT&T trivestiture and is experienced in assessing patent portfolios. Ms. Sheft has provided IP guidance to many of the high technology M&A and divestiture activities at AT&T and Lucent. Ms. Sheft has extensive business development experience outside the U.S. She played a lead role in negotiating a long-term alliance between Lucent/Agere and NEC in the field of semiconductor manufacturing technology. The alliance has lasted over a decade and is a prime example of collaboration between competitors. Ms. Sheft has a BS and MS in Mathematics from the University of Illinois
and an MBA in International Business from the Wharton School of the
University of Pennsylvania. She is a frequent speaker on the topic
of intellectual property and strategic alliances and is an active
member of the Licensing Executive’s Society.
SBDC Senior Consultant, President and owner of PJG Consulting (former Director of Small Business Office, NJ Dept of Commerce) Patrick Guidotti has over thirty five years with the New Jersey State government in areas of procurement, construction, small business certification and economic development. During his time with the New Jersey government he has held several management positions working in the Division of Building & Construction and the Department of Commerce. While with the Division of Building & Construction he was the lead man in a survey crew with the Civil Engineering Section and also became manager of the Contractors Prequalification Office where he was responsible for the contractor’s classification program. His next position was with the Department of Commerce. He spent many years there in the Small Business Office, rising to the Director’s position where he was charged with the responsibility of administering and monitoring the small, women and minority set-aside and certification program. He also was responsible for the small business assistance and development program and represented the Department of Commerce on the Governor’s Study Commission on Discrimination in Public Works and Construction Contracts. For the past several years, Mr. Guidotti has partnered with the New Jersey Small Business Development Center (SBDC), a publicly funded organization that provides assistance to small businesses. He has been tapped as keynote speaker covering areas of certification, procurement and construction and has provided one on one counseling through the SBDC to hundreds of businesses. Mr. Guidotti has been a guest speaker at many events and received numerous awards from various organizations including The American Society of Professional Estimators, The National Association of Purchasing Management, The National Contract Management Association, The New Jersey Association of Women Business Owners and The Regional Alliance for Small Contractors. Currently Mr. Guidotti is President and sole owner of PJG Consulting, a business development and assistance firm specializing in government procurement and construction contracting. He is also a full partner of THE Contract Connection, LLC. This business development consulting firm was formed to help businesses
navigate government contracting opportunities, including Federal,
State and local agencies. It is part of the New Jersey Chamber of
Commerce Affinity group.
HSBC Bank, Vice President Branch Manager Chang has been with HSBC for over 2 1/2 years and was recently promoted to
become the Branch Manager of our Edison, NJ. He was been
involved in the financial industry field for over 15 years since
graduating from Lafayette College, Easton PA. Chang was the
2009 "The HSBC Way" recipient for outstanding performance,
for assisting personal and business customer regarding their global
wealth and financial servicing needs.
Andy Kron, Chief Operating Officer of Across Nations Certified Development Company Across Nations CDC is a non-for-profit organization established to fund for-profit small to mid-size businesses to encourage Economic development and job creation in the private sector through Government Funding Programs, especially the U.S. Small Business Administration 504 Program. Mr. Kron has been in the finance business for the last 20 years and

Chairman, Sustainable Business Incubator Senior Fellow, Institute for Sustainable Enterprise, Fairleigh Dickinson University, and Founder, Center for Leadership in Sustainability Jonathan Cloud is a lifelong environmentalist, community organizer, and entrepreneur. An early pioneer in passive-solar design and construction in Canada in the 1970s and 80s, as well as an environmental community activist, he received a UN Environment Award in 1985, in recognition of his work in renewable energy, conservation, and appropriate technology. His career has spanned journalism, politics, invention, housing design and construction, database, software, and Internet development, financial services, networking, nonprofits, network marketing, and sustainable business development. His current focus is on reorganizing the Sustainable Business Incubator,
which assists entrepreneurs with start-up ventures in renewable
energy, CO2 reduction, and other environmental technologies, as well
as with emerging business models involving carbon trading,
sustainability consulting, and sustainable social enterprises.
Microbiologist, Ecologist and Professor of Public Health in Environmental Health Sciences at Columbia University. Dr. Despommier conducts research on intracellular parasitism and teaches courses on Parasitic Diseases, Medical Ecology and Ecology. In recent years, Despommier has received considerable media coverage for his ideas on Vertical Farming . Vertical Farms are a proposed agricultural technique involving large-scale agriculture in urban high-rises or "farmscrapers". Using advanced greenhouse technology and greenhouse methods such as hydroponics, these buildings would produce fruit, vegetables, edible mushrooms and algae year-round! Dr. Despommier's new book "The Vertical Farm: Feeding the World in the 21st Century" has just come out.

Entrepreneur and VC, Managing Director, Sterling Atlantic, LLC
Mr. Ray Garcia has over 20 years of experience in technology innovation
and strategy within large global corporations and entrepreneurial
ventures. He has consulted for venture capital and PE firms in New
York City as part of his advisory practice. Ray has launched several
startup ventures as well as advised over 30 Internet startups at
various stages of growth. He has expertise in the research and
development of complex commercial software products for delivery to
international clients. Early in his career he worked as an executive
in banking for Citibank, Republic National Bank (HSBC), and did
consulting work for Morgan Stanley and Bank of America. His first
startup venture experience was with Clearcross, a leader in
international trade software which is now owned by Kewill, a publicly
traded UK company. After working for the investor community for a few
years Ray co-founded Smart Systems Technology, an early innovator in
the proximity (contactless RFID) payments industry. Most recently,
Ray was an Executive in Residence at MIT Media Lab, and is currently
a board advisor and Executive in Residence at the Field Center for
Entrepreneurship at Baruch College City University of New York. Ray
serves as a coach to aspiring entrepreneurs and has formalized this
process within the BCAP.biz program to help promote international
economic development through entrepreneurship. He is a graduate from
the School of Engineering at City College of New York and resides in
NYC.
Mr. Ho graduated from Master of Accounting program in the University of Rhode Island in 1979 and have had more than 30 years accounting and taxation experience and 24 years as CPA. He started his own accounting firm serving both individual and corporate customers since 22 years ago. Before then, he was a tax manager of Formosa Plastic Corporation in Livingston, NJ, which is the largest public trading corporation based in Taiwan. Carol Ho jointed Ho’s Accounting firm

EVP of Sundia MediTech Company in Shanghai. Dr. Xiongwei Shi received his Ph.D. in synthetic organic chemistry in 1993 from Sate University of New York. Then he moved to Cornell University as a postdoctoral research associate in synthetic organic chemistry? In 1996, Dr. Shi started his industrial career as a senior chemical process scientist in Schering-Plough Research Institute. During the period of 1996-2004, Dr. Shi involved in many development projects to support phase I, II, III clinical studies and commercial production of intermediates and APIs. These projects included new synthesis and process development of Anti-Fungal and Anti-Cancer drugs and other drug candidates for Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, AIDS disease. In 2004, Dr. Shi established United Pharmatech, offering global pharmaceutical company's diverse custom synthesis, process research, development and scale-up outsourcing services as well as manufacturing of pharmaceutical intermediates and APIs in cGMP environment. In 2007, his company merged with Sundia Meditech to provide an integrated service for clients worldwide. Currently, his company has more than 600 scientists with over 100 clients. Dr. Shi has been an Executive Committee Member of Sino-American Pharmaceutical Professionals Association (SAPA), Lifetime Member of SAPA and Member of American Chemical Society for many years. He has published more 30 peer-reviewed papers in international journals and holds many patents. In 2004, Dr. Shi quitted a nice job in Schering-Plough and went back to Shanghai to start up United Pharmatech Co. Ltd, an outsourcing service company, offering global pharmaceutical company's diverse custom synthesis, process R&D and scale-up production of clinical intermediates and APIs required in cGMP environment. Six years later, his company has become a leading CRO company in China.
Blake Zhang, Daiwa Capital Markets
Since Sep. 2001, Blake started career in New York with JP Morgan Chase Bank. He has been working in Daiwa Capital Markets as the Vice President on Proprietary Trading Desk responsible for dynamic market risk management since 2006. Daiwa Capital Markets is one of the 18 primary dealers of the US Treasury today. Meanwhile, as an active board director of Asian Financial Society (AFS), a non-profit organization initially founded by and affiliated with the Committee 100, he serves AFS today that connects about 3,000 professionals in the U.S. Blake holds an MBA degree from NYU Stern, M.Sc. from National Univ. of Singapore (NUS)
and B.Sc. from University of International Business and Economics (UIBE).

李山泉先生,美国奥本海墨基金管理公司董事总经理,高级基金经理,负责该公司环球股票投资的管理。具有十几年投资管理的直接经验。作为新华社特约高级分析师,李先生曾任中国旅美金融协会首任主席、美中基金会以及多个华人组织的高级顾问。他经常受到海内外媒体的采访,并经常在电视台、报纸和杂志发表有关金融问题的评论。多次应国内有关部门的邀请,参加各种研讨会和报告会。 1982年,李山泉毕业于中国人民大学国民经济管理专业,在国务院发展研究中心从事国民经济综合问题的研究。在发展中心近五年的时间里,参与了许多文件、报告的起草工作,并在报纸和杂志发表有关经济问题的文章。 1986年6月,李先生应美国驻中国大使洛德之邀,进入美国政府汉弗莱交流计划,对美国进行为期一年的访问。1987年9月,他重返美攻读学位。1989年6月,李先生获BRANDEIS大学国际经济和金融硕士学位。 李先生在学期间(1990)就被ACADIAN投资管理公司雇用,开始了投资管理的研究和实践。1991年2月,他来到纽约受聘于老牌的华尔街布朗兄弟公司,在投资战略部任高级分析师,从事有关投资战略的分析和研究工作。1995年11月到奥本海墨基金公司环球投资部任基金经理。2010他管理的基金被美国共同基金评鉴机构(LIPPER)评为同类基金5年第一。
